Quick Tip: Freezer Organization

Since we just have a small, above the fridge type freezer- and 5 people, I am forever working on ways to maximize our space. This also helps minimize our food budget! The key to keeping a freezer effective and efficient is organization.
One of my favorite findings is freezing items FLAT so they stack and fit nicely.
I also LOVE using baskets to keep things grouped together, AND to keep them from falling out on me.

Another tip that homemakers use for freezers of all sizes is inventorying them. I used to keep mine in my Home Binder, but it was sometimes hard to remember to cross off when I'd use something. So, I switched to posting my chart on the fridge. That seemed to work, except it fell a lot, got drawn on by little artists, was a dirt magnet, etc. Now I use an index card system. Simple to do, simple to read, and stays both handy for Mom and out of the way of grubby little snatchers.
It's super easy to meet YOUR needs. I use the following categories: beef, pork, chicken, veggies, other, desserts/juices (we hardly ever have either! lol), and ingredients/condiments/etc.

The meats are pretty self-explanatory.  I'll have some things that are cooked and portioned into family-sized servings (like ground beef), and some that are marinating. The card should tell me what's going on. Somethings are just popped into the freezer because I got them on the sell-by date and I hadn't time to fix them up. Since my charcoal steaks say nothing about them, I know I'll have to slice them up or something when I go to use them.

"Other" has things like leftovers we like for lunches- but not the next day. Such as chili, curry, etc. Hot dogs also go here because we seldom have them, and they are often mixed meats. I have some catfish nuggets in the freezer right now, so that's there too.

Things like my cubes of tomato paste, cubes of grated ginger, and pork fat for rendering are in the "ingredients..." category. When I get butter on sale, it goes here too.

I go through a lot of "Veggies" cards. To simply it, I break some things like ears of corn into family-serving sizes. Other things I mark how much is left rather than cross the whole bag off.

It's all right there for me to make my menu plans/shopping lists with a magnetic clip. (4 for $1 in the dollar bins at Target.) Every once-in-a-while, when a card is full or too messy to read, I'll go through and re-write the unused items from it on a clean one. This week my "beef" card is nice and pretty! ;-)

Quick Tip For Storing Task-Specific Supplies

We've started making our own laundry detergent since I've found a mixture that you don't mix with water/need a bunch of extra space for. I don't have a laundry area or laundry room, but I did want to keep the ingredients and hardware used away from little hands and out of the way.
So, I bought a CHEAP set of measuring cups, a set of wooden spoons (used one for my "kit") and a cheapo grater so I could mark these tools and keep them in a plastic tub with the ingredients.
Now, this kit has a lid and is tucked away safely. I even have a bag of extra detergent that didn't fit in my container in there so I won't be searching for it later.(I even mix the detergent up in the tub too!)

Homemade Natural Soft Scrub

Here's another use for Dr. Bronner's Castile soap that I use around the house. It's quick and easy to make, so you can always whip it up when needed, and not have it sit around.

Simply mix together 3 parts baking soda, and one part Dr. Bronner's or other Castile soap.
Cut together with a fork, it'll start to look like a tiny batch of biscuits. =-)
Stir in drops of water, as needed, until it becomes a creamy paste.
There are many "recipes" out there that include vinegar. While I am a BIG fan of cleaning with vinegar, NEVER mix vinegar with Castile soap. It unsaponifies the soap, separating it and making it useless. Oily and useless.

Now that you've got your scrub, you can clean all over the place.

Coffee spill under the maker and dry on the counter?

A little soft scrub with a rag:
Gone with little effort!
Little ones are getting the fridge all grubby?
Gone.
 Happy cleaning!

Have You Seen This!? Homemade Stain Remover

Have you seen THIS post all over Pinterest? It's from One Good Thing By Jillee, a blog FULL of awesome.

Homemade stain remover. And I thought I'd give it a try.

The original "recipe" is this: (but I halved it to try...)
  • 2/3 C Dawn
  • 2/3 C ammonia
  • 6 Tablespoons baking soda
  • 2 C warm water
Shake it all together in a spray bottle. Shake your boot-aaay while you do it. The kids love that.

Grab a preschooler's jacked-up white t-shirt. Cry about the spaghetti on it because you were too tired to remember to get it off of her before dinner.Wonder if the stain remover will mess up the glitter bits. Then don't care because there is tomato sauce on the damn thing. (*you may omit and replace this step with one more suitable to your household.)

bleep bleepity bleep.
Grab your handy-dandy stain remover, give it a shake. Spray. Pray. Rub it a little bit.
Holy moly.

Wow. Jillee, I could kiss you! It didn't even mess up the glittery bits! That slight shadow of sauce was even GONE after washing. AMAZING.

My Most Recent Cleaning Love

I never thought I'd love a product with such hype, but after trying I have to say it:
I love Dr. Bronner's Castile Soaps.

I've always been on the hunt for things that are easy on The Princess' allergies and eczema, and for things that make cleaning green a breeze. These bottles of concentrated soapy goodness fit perfectly. A couple drops in bathwater get the little one squeaky-clean without irritating her skin or leaving any residues. A follow up with some coconut oil before popping on her jammies and she's set. =-) I like using it full strength on a wet washcloth for myself, and it still rinses away. The peppermint leaves a lovely tingle! The Princess loves the lavender for her baths.

I also thought I'd give it a try in cleaning.  A couple drops in a bucket of hot HOT water has been cleaning things all over the house. It really does seem "magical."

I've been using them like crazy for about two months, and still only have used about an inch from each bottle! So, I'm saving money too! They'll last SO long! I definitely need to write down and share ALL the specific "recipes" and uses I've done!

Look out for posts on:

NaBloPoMo 2011 Is Off to a Rocky Start

Ok, a crappy start. =-(

I had some really pretty pictures, of some really pretty Autumn decorations on my laptop...but you know...my plug decided to quit working. The little-black-box-thingie decided it was done. D-O-N-E done.
We looked it up while trying to find one to order, and apparently this model kinda just goes when it gets older. Many people who own this laptop are on their 2nd-4th plug. Thanks Gateway. =-/

Thank goodness for Hubby's computer, his know-how, and the smarts to order me one as a customer of his company. I didn't think of that while I was freaking out about my lack of funds. Yay him. =-D So hopefully soon. (3-5 business days...) I will be back 100%- with pictures! Untill then, it'll be quick-tips, and whining about my computer. Whine, whine, whine....
Waaaait...I'm officially his client now, right? Can I complain if it takes too long? ;-)

Ok, so let me leave you with a quick-tip from this time last year. Probably my favorite, and most used tip ever. (I'm clumsy!)

I LOVE This Stuff!

I had read somewhere about people using Bar Keeper's Friend on their pots and pans that were getting old, or had some "heat damage" and wondered how well it would work on my cleaning nemesis.
My electric stove's drip pans.
I have tried EVERYTHING on those, but they never seem to get shiny again. It wasn't just the grease and gunk that stained them, but the heat of cooking that made them look grimy. Living in a rental, I was prepared to buy new drip pans to replace ours when we moved- or be charged more to have them replaced. Seems kind of sucky when the simple act of cooking is the biggest problem with their appearance. So, seeing as the Bar Keeper's Friend was cheap, easy to find, and promised great results, I gave it a try.

I grabbed a washed, but still sad looking drip pan. Wet it and gave it a sprinkling of Bar Keeper's Friend.
BEFORE- clean, but not
I let it sit for a few minutes, then grabbed a half a steel wool pad. I braced myself for a lot of scrubbing. I didn't need to. There was scrubbing, but not SCRUBBING like I had expected. It. Was. Awesome.
A quick rinse, and I was showing everyone in the house my shiny beautiful drip pan. They were not as excited as I was.
AFTER- I heard choirs of angels
I LOVE this stuff!

Baking Soda In The Kitchen

There are thousands, and thousands of ways to use baking soda around the house- here are a few handy ways to use this versatile powder in your kitchen.

  • An oldie, but a goody...to clean a clogged or stubborn drain the eco-friendly way, pour 1/4 cup of baking soda down the drain, followed by a pot of boiling water. Repeat as needed.
  • Baking soda will cut the grease on all sorts of pots, pans, and even the bottom of your oven. For extra easy oven cleaning, sprinkle baking soda on those pesky spill-overs, and when you're ready, lift up the whole mess with a spatula and wipe with a damp rag.
  • A damp sponge dipped in a little baking soda will quickly rub out stubborn stains on counter tops. Even fruit juice and coffee stains will disappear!
  • Cleaning microwave gunk and grime is easy if you mix two tablespoons of baking soda with a bowl of water, and run the microwave for about two minutes. Let the steam sit in the microwave for a few minutes longer, and the yuck will wipe out quickly and easily!
  • Adding a bit of baking soda to your homemade tomato sauces will cut out some of the acidic tastes.
Bonus tip: For cleaning around the house, I wash very well, and sanitize an old Parmesan cheese can  for sprinkling baking soda with ease.

Quick Tip: Cleaning With Citrus

Have you ever had fruit sitting in the bowl...too gone for anyone to want to eat- but not yet rotting so you can't throw it out? Here's something you can do to use up lemons & grapefruits that are slightly past their prime.

Cut your fruit in half- dip the cut side in some salt...and scub-a-dub your tub and shower walls clean! Easy peasy! Dip in more salt as needed.

New Toy!

Here's my new toy, eerr... gadget, that I'll be trying out & "reporting" on.

The washer...not the cat

I read a boat-load of great things about it before I purchased, & bad things about the much-higher-priced name-almost-stealing "Wonder Washer"...basically, the "Wonder Washer" is said to be crap.
The two younger kids & I popped it into the bathtub to try it out AS SOON as Mr. UPS dropped it off. Well, handed it to me as I opened the door when I heard his truck. No, I wasn't waiting for it all day...who said that!?
We just tossed in some RANDOM things from the hamper, so later I'll do a few much more thought-out loads to show a measurable amount of what this baby can do. It looks like we threw in about 3 socks, 2 washcloths, a cleaning cloth, a pair of men's boxer-briefs, a mommy-sized shirt, a little boy's pj top, a daddy-sized t-shirt, and a daddy-sized pair of slacks. Wow, I love hyphenated words.

Yep 3 socks, and none match
I also tried to take a picture of the water draining out...because it was so yucky it was cool. Can you tell I have boys?
You can't really tell though...

Oh yeah.... by-the-way...
SCHOOL GOES BACK TOMORROW!
WHOOOOHOOO!

Ps... I'm not replacing normal washers (Oh Dear Heavens I have 3 children!) But to help me with those hand-washing ones I do between laundrymat visits. ("Mom I ran out of socks" "Mom, G threw up on her sheets" & the kitchen rags! =-)

Refrigerator Drip Pans...Aka ZOMGoodness WTF is That Smell!?

Until this morning I was blissfully unaware that my refrigerator had a drip pan. I mean, of course if you THINK about it...why wouldn't it? But why would I think about it!?

Soooo...about 5 days ago, the back corner of my kitchen had a faint whiff of socks. Noticed, of course, only after a full day...and the midnight hour quickly approaching. After a quick sniff-around of the area, we determined it was coming from the fridge. Did something die!? Did the kids spill something under it!? Is the cat hiding food? We can clean it in the morning...it's only a few hours away after all.

Sooooo...the next morning, after pulling out & cleaning under and behind the fridge. (By the way, Cat, I know where your toys are...) The wonderful aroma of bleach cleaner filled my kitchen & I was sure the smell had left.

Sooooo...the next day...I know, right? I smell socks-mixed-with-yogurt-mixed-with-butt. Is it IN the fridge? I clean the fridge...I pull out the veggie drawer. What's that little thingie? A drain. I bet that's nasty! I pulled it out & cleaned it. It was gross. I thought I was done.

Another day of sniffing...& wondering... I ran out of things to check & clean! It was stronger...not any worse of a smell...but stronger. More ass than butt now...
Is there something up in bottom? Is that possible? Should I...look!? Maybe I'll save it for Hubby...OMFGosh, no...it smells, I can't wait. But I have to, again it's like 1 in the morning, NOT a good time to try & take apart the fridge!

So glad I waited, with a few hours of sleep I was able to have a thought! I should totally LOOK UP on the internet HOW TO get in there first! Great idea, right? So I look it up..guess what...
I learned about drip pans!

Apparently, those little suckers not only collect the water that drips from the self-defrosting feature, but bits of food & junk as well. THEN the water mostly evaporates...leaving behind a sludge of bacteria, mess, and hell. And you're SUPPOSED to clean it. We've been here a year, never knew about it to clean it- & I doubt it's been cleaned before us. For reals...I pulled that sucker out...& THREW UP. I'm not pregnant, not weak-stomached...& I barfed like a model after Sizzler.

Sooooo....long story short...
Go, RIGHT NOW- find & clean your gosh-forsaken drip pans!

Ps...My kitchen smells lovely now, thank you.

Quick Tip: Cleaning up Egg Mess

I am super clumsy. So clumsy in fact that I am always looking for quick ways to clean up the various things I drop, spill, smear, etc....

Next time you drop an egg on the floor, don't smear it around wiping it up. Instead dump a nice thickish layer of regular table salt over the egg & let sit for a couple minutes. Perhaps while to attend to your batter or pan... Then simply lift the now easy-to-clean clump with a spatula & toss. Then wipe away any leftover salt or white.

BzzAgent.com & Scrubbing Bubbles

So, as some of my pals may know I am a member of a really cool site called BzzAgent.com which helps spread word of mouth advertising and opinions on brands of products. As moms, we know that peers are really who we listen to when we're deciding what to buy, so I really think this site is a great idea. Number two reason why- in my mind... the "BzzCampaigns"! They let members try out, and report on new or newly improved products. Anything from beauty to cleaning, to food.
I was super stoked to get the chance to review the new Scrubbing Bubbles Automated Shower Cleaner. I am about a week in, but already I know it has greatly improved. Word of mouth & seeing a peer's is why I didn't get one when they first came out a few years ago, but I am (for now) liking this new one. The old ones were cheap feeling, sprayed badly or not at all, and the cleaning solution- let's be frank- sucked. Hard. Let's see how the rest of the month goes! =-)

Make Your Own All Purpose Cleaner

Here's a nice recipe for an all purpose cleaner.

You will need a 16 oz spray bottle.
Put into it 2 Tablespoons vinegar and 1 teaspoon borax.
Add about 6 oz hot water, and swish around until the borax dissolves.
Then add about 5 drops of dish washing detergent, and a couple drops of your choice of essential oils.
Fill the bottle the rest of the way with water.
